Oprah Winfrey's Leadership Academy for Girls is Doing a Very, Very Good Thing |

Oprah Winfrey's leadership academy for girls is a remarkable endeavor, although it has had some criticism from small pockets of people in the US who believe she should duplicate her efforts to underprivileged kids in the US. I just read a book about the Lost Boys of South Africa, called What is the What, and I can see why she spent millions to open the Oprah Winfrey's leadership academy for girls there. The children in parts of Africa have suffered more than we can possibly know, which is what the book is about, so I now understand why she choose to support the girls of South Africa.
The roles that women have in parts of South Africa are completely diminished, compared to roles that girls in the US can choose for themselves. I would love it if this book would be chose for an Oprah book club selection, because, as far as I am concerned, it is a must read. It is an emotionally difficult book to read, from start to nearly the finish, but the payoff for reading through the 540 pages is life changing. I believe I will write Oprah and let her know about this priceless book. She needs to endorse it, which will put it in the hands and minds of millions. |
