Oprahology? Material driven attitudes can be frightning.

Scientologists must go through a process to first be accepted into Scientology. Oprah may be looking to try and do something similar and not really being aware of it. To me the primary concern should be to help all girls, not just black girls, not just girls who are highly intelligent or a certain way. Scientologists take personality tests in order to get accepted in up to 16% of the groups membership, although referrals are even more common. Oprah hand picks her girls based on what Oprah deems appropriate. Tests are a big part of it but to get in, it is Oprah who has final say. I personally don't think you can exclude anyone if you want to remain pure in motivation. Just this bloggers point of view. I don't want to knock Oprahs school but hey, 40,000,000 could probably feed 1,000,000 starving people in the world for a year, or house and educate 100 times the children.

If you help people, don't turn it into look I'm playing God-show and I'll decide who needs help and what they will do for me in return. 'Leaders of tomorrow'...., you can only give people an education, they might easily be the villains of tomorrow, it not up to Oprah or anyone. And I heartily agree that the standards of admission are very questionable. As if Oprah will 'feel' who is to be admitted. Well, she's wrong at hiring at least one member of the staff, that's for sure.

Oprah isn't Jesus. She is a sad, damaged person, turned into a control freak, trying to restore what was wrongfully done to her, by 'helping' others and playing an aloof role in her safe studio on top of the world.

Listen, we all have shortcomings that we compensate for. At least she is helping people in process. My experience is that people will "over" compensate, to a point that EGO and Power hunger raises its ungly head. Oprah will probably learn from this hopefully, but the world is at her feet. What she does with it is where it gets sticky.

But I sincerely doubt if she is actually helping people. Pressurizing young girls to become 'the leaders of tomorrow' and putting them in a boarding school doesn't seem helping to me. I've lived in a third world country and know our perception of what is good can differ from their reality; you can't just take the American model and adapt it to Africa. Secondly; advocating obscure theories like 'The Secret' and helping them to a large audience isn't helpful either; no one gets better deluding oneself. And that is what one does, if one tells oneself over and over some ideas, until one starts believing in them. Reality and thinking about reality can never be the same, unless you have enough money to create your own private phantasy-world.

PS; maybe 'pressurizing' is the wrong word for it. 'Bribing' is a better one. Who could resist an offer living in an 30million dollar estate and getting a free education, even if that education is part of some rich lady's phantasie on black, female leadership and a 'new world'-vision. These children can't know if they're better of getting this 'education' and then returning to real Sout-African life. Unless they all get jobs at Harpo's.

Well Oprah has lost it, doing something for people doesnt meae that u have to control there life. It's sad that it have to go down like this Its but i know u have a good heart so please do what is wright

I have had extensive contact with people in the New Age movement, mostly those on the frontlines where few people question what is being presented to them, and I can tell you that they are all out of their minds. The internet generation needs to do a few things to assure the future of humanity. 1.) Read up on the history and beliefs of those involved with the New Age movement and track the organizations promoting this junk. 2.) Monitor very closely what your kids/family take in through the media because that is what these people go after. If you suspect you are being pursued by New Agers, do not talk to them about anything you might be having difficulty with in your life. They prey on other people's weaknesses so that they can provide a 'solution' which can be anything from money to suggesting severing ties with family/friends in order to facilitate 'letting go'. 3.) Most importantly, stick to your faith and never let someone question it or reinterpret for you. There is no such thing as a new idea, just deviousness in the way New Agers present them. Lastly, stay away from greedy people, whether they want fame, money, sex, food, drugs, peace, love, power, etc. it all leads down a road you don't want to go. I have been there and can tell you from experience that there's no going back because it changes you in ways that your own parents don't understand.

Wow...anon 11/28/2007... that's some heavy stuff ... tobad we are see things differently and from our own world view ... sounds to me that you think you have the monopoly on how to save the world from individualism there ... It never ceases to amaze me how people can grab on to the well meaning efforts of one rich person like Ophra and then try to shoot them down in flame ... I wonder what they would do with the money if they had it ...

I believe Oprah, and anyone else with charitable ideas and activities can do whatever they want for whoever they want. I can't believe someone would even criticize such unbelievable gestures she and others make to help others. Whose job it is to provide education to those girls? Aha. They aren't doing it! So if someone else wants to go in there and do it, let them. And they should get a big fat Thank You from the people who are at best ignoring their responsibilities and at worst purposefully preventing the education from being given to the students. Once the girls graduate they will be moving on to help their continent in ways it has probably never even seen. That's why she preselected them---so they will move on and take big portions of responsibility in Africa. Not so that they can go back to their homes and "get a job." She's taking the ones who will step up to the cause, take their new education and use it to bring new light and energy to their continent. It's actually genius the way this will work to change the situations in Africa. She's just going back to her own roots and helping the place from which she came. I.e., if her roots came from any other continent she probaby would have set it up there. And then moved on to Africa anyway! Who is already not doing their job? And there you will find others who care mobilizing to do that job and help those who are getting the short end or no end at all. So I would like to express my appreciation for Oprah and all the others who step in to improve our sorry lot on this planet. Yes, there are many beautiful places on Earth. But it is being ignored and even made worse by so many whose job it is to FIX IT, that when someone does take such a big and positive step towards "repair," they should be left to get on with it and be assisted in their projects. I personally thank Oprah SOOOOOOO much for demonstrating her undying care and leading the way in taking Big Steps Towards Repairing our Planet, wherever and whenever she wants. She just doesn't quit.
