what about the dismissive attitude Oprah used with parent's of "her" girls? When they complained about the hardship and difficulty of maintaining contact with their daughters, Oprah told them if they didn't like it,they could pull their kids out of the program. The people who cared the most for those girls were treated like unwanted influences.

I sort of agree with the last blogger about Oprah and how Oprahs school is a symbol of Oprah more than it is anything else. When you use words like "my girls" it makes me uneasy. They're not your girls Oprah. They have parents who have raised them or trying to raise them anyway. Oprah is looking for willing and highly motivated people .... Can you say Oprahology?

I definitely disagree with the earlier comments. This is a sad and tragic situatiion but this crisis represents an opportunity. This isn't a defeat for the girls nor Oprah. The school will definitely be strengthen and hopefully an advisory board will be started with strong women that Oprah trust who have the time, the interest and knowlegde basis to be Oprah's eyes and ears. Some people like Johnetta Coles etc.

I was just doing a search and came across a sketch of Oprah & Girls of the leadership academy fetching $$$millions on Ebay. It leaves one to think of all this lady have done and yet the struggle still continues.........I am not against the artist or seller for requesting that much.....as in my opinion anything that represents such a person should definately worth paying for... I am just wondering how comes none of her celebrity friends hasn't step up to bid........I know she would do it for them......She gives so much..........The majority of the public can't compete in an auction of that size ...so we sit and watch in hope that someone who can will do so............ Let us get these pals of hers to put his/her best foot forward.......... To see sketch on ebay, Item number: 110189356377.. I have bookmark it , so I will check in to see if anything changes...

This school is perverse; it's like cooking a six-course five-star meal for ten elected Ethiopians instead of feeding thousands. If you have the money, and Oprah does, then try to be sensible about it. Better to build a hundred normal schools for poor black children, than one elite school for the same amount of money.

It's great that there is an educational option for the poor girls in Africa, but do the boys not need the education just as much??

I am doing research on Oprah's Leadership academy and plan on developing my thesis from my research. I will monitor this site closely with hope to finding some useful data. I encourage discourse on this topic and, specifically, I am interested in some key points: What does the school's curriculum look like? What types of educational philosophies and delivery methods are being used? Are there any requirements that these girls must remain in South Africa for college? After college? Are the South African values embraced? How is the issues of empowerment and multiculturalism approached? If anyone has any responsed to these questions, your input will be helpful.

Can anyone explain me, what's so wonderful about 'leadership'. Leadership at such isn't good or bad, isn't it? It depends on how you're a leader, if you're capable of being one. Hitler was quite good at leadersip, if you know what I mean. Isn't being capable of being a leader a matter of a certain constitution, talent, like being musical; some people have qualities that make them suitabel to run a company or become a politician etc. I don't think you can 'learn' this, if you haven't got the talent for it. Anyway, why try and 'breed' a 'generation of leaders'? They'll all be after the same jobs later on; South Africa isn't that big. And who garantuees us they'll be GOOD leaders? Is Oprah, is her staff infallible? VAn they 'mould' children, who in the end are their own person? Maybe it's better to teach them the normal stuff and leave it to their own development, if they'll become leaders, or bakers, or florists, or whatever.

I'd like to comment on the last couple of bloggers. I think it is wonderful that she protect these girls as she is. As a South African I know the circumstances these children has grown up. When they go home they are exposed to all of this again. These girls are the future of South Africa! They need to be "raised" for it. They know their family loves them but I assure you that 99% of these girls do not even want to go home for the holidays. That is how bad they had it at "home". Viva Oprah for what you are doing! You make Jesus proud!

In response to why there is no like school for boys: Oprah is only trying to create a society run and dominated by women. This just falls in line with her "new women order" philosophy. Case in point, her O (Oxygen) channel on TV, it is called, "TV for Women"! While it is refreshing to see more women in leadership roles, do we really need a whole society dominated by women only? Sounds rather opportunistic on her part to me. I'd say good luck, but that could be construed as an endorsement.
