With constantly growing global emphasis on global warming, South African buildings and residences are starting to take seriously the ambition to lessen the carbon footprin by using design and technological innovation to decrease energy consumption and limit waste. This is so at Oprah's School as well.
South African "Green" architect and founder of Cape Town based Eco Design Architects & Consultants, Andy Horn, has drawn up a manifesto for green architecture.
Horn and his team of architects and consultants have been involved in a number of smaller sustainable green projects including Oprah Winfrey's Leadership Academy for Girls and the Seven Fountains primary school in Shayamoya, near Kok-stad, in KwaZulu-Natal.
The Seven Fountains primary school, funded by Oprah Winfrey's Angel network, uses a gray water system along with see-saws and merry-go-rounds to pump it, along with landscaped gardens that supply vegetables for school meals. Oprah's school also makes use of solar panels and passive solar design with insulated brick to improve thermal comfort, while reducing energy consumption.
