BELOW IS A POST FROM ASAP AFRICA. WE ARE EXPERIENCING SOME CHALLENGES GETTING THEM INTO THE BLOG. FOR NOW, I WILL POST THEIR MESSAGE:
Oprah Winfrey works to offer access to an excellent education for impoverished girls in South Africa. Without an education these girls would have little hope of reaching their highest potential. The mission of the Oprah's Leadership Academy for Girls in South Africa must be praised for its good work.
At ASAP Africa, we have been working to help orphans and vulnerable children to access education in rural Zimbabwe since 1994. We all must face the facts; no matter how much we strive to accomplish it will never be enough. The need is so great, but each day we are guided by the wisdom of Edmond Burke, "Nobody made a greater mistake than he who did nothing because he could only do a little."
ASAP Africa is a non-profit organization that began our grassroots work in rural Africa funding school fees for orphans. After five years we realized that were, in reality, creating dependence on our "self-help" organization. Today ASAP Africa is proud to truly empower women to care for and educate their own children through the Village Savings and Lending project. Please read more about our philosophy in the article published by the UN Chronicle. www.un.org/Pubs/chronicle/2006/webArticles/121506_asap.htm
At ASAP Africa, we believe, like Oprah, that the key to eliminating poverty is through education. In Zimbabwe we say "Mushandiripamwe" (Let's all work together) to create monumental changes towards stronger communities. You may learn more about ASAP's work at www.asapafrica.org.
